BTG receives certificate from Minister Verburg (LNV)

29-6-2009

On June 11, BTG received a certificate for the project “Groene Grondstoffen uit Bio-olie” from Gerda Verburg, the Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Nature and Food-quality. This certificate was awarded for the work BTG performed on the production of green chemicals and half-products derived from pyrolysis-oil. In this project, both the economic and technical feasibility concerning the production of several ‘green’ products was evaluated. Based on the positive results from this project, development work will be continued by BTG.

During the ceremonial event, Minister Verburg praised the attendees for their pioneering work in creating the green economy: Quote (Dutch):

“Dames en heren,
In deze zaal zit een groot aantal helden van de groene economie. Pioniers van het eerste uur. U mag daar trots op zijn. Ik ben dat ook. Zonder u als pioniers kwam er natuurlijk niets van al deze ontwikkelingen terecht.”

Environmental Impact Assessment for new pyrolysis plant

9-4-2009

BTG Bioliquids BV is going to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment for their planned pyrolysis factory at the premises of AkzoNobel in Hengelo (The Netherlands). The pyrolysis plant will convert wood into oil. The factory will also deliver excess steam to AkzoNobel and generate electricity that will be supplied to the Dutch grid. Condcuting an Environmental Impact Assessment ("MER" in Dutch) is mandatory by law.

The factory will process 5 tons of wood per hour, which will be converted to oil, steam and electricity. The installation will be constructed on a commercial basis. BTG has built a pyrolysis unit in Malaysia in 2005, and is already operating a pilot unit in their laboratory for more than 10 years. The new plant in Hengelo is going to be the largest pyrolysis unit in Europe and the largest functioning plant in the world.

At this moment BTG-BTL is negotiating with suppliers, financing parties and authorities. Expected start of construction is the first quarter of 2010.

BTG Bioliquids, trade name BTG-BTL, is part of the BTG Biomass Technology Group BV located in Enschede, the Netherlands. BTG-BTL is responsible for the activities concerning Biomass To Liquid. Together with the University of Twente, BTG started developing a unique technology that converts biomass into pyrolysis oil in the nineteen-eighties. The technology is now ready to be implemented on a commercial basis.

Bioliquids-CHP kicks off

5-3-2009

Operating small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) systems (50-1000 kWe) on solid biomass is often expensive and not always reliable. This is due to e.g. the presence of minerals in the biomass and the low energy density of biomass feedstocks. Furthermore CHP plant operators tend to prefer fuels that are easy to use such as liquids or natural gas.

The project "Bioliquids-CHP" was developed to break down these barriers by following a double approach. On the one hand, the project will develop and modify engines and turbines so that these can run efficiently on bioliquids such as biodiesel, vegetable oil and pyrolysis oil. On the other hand, bioliquids will be upgraded and blended in order to facilitate their use in engines and turbines. Thus, the most economic and reliable engine/turbine-bioliquids combinations will be developed.

In February 2009 researchers from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy and Russia met in Enschede for the kick-off meeting of the project. The European Commission financially supports the work of the EU partners, whereas the Russian project partners get support from the Federal Agency for Science and Innovations (FASI) of the Russian Federation. The project, which is coordinated by BTG, will reinforce the cooperation between European and Russian experts in the renewable energy field and develop technologies that can be exploited and have great impacts on the Eurasian continent.
