Test facilities

Over a period of 20 years, a large number of test facilities have been designed, constructed and operated for the conversion of biomass and residues into useful products. The units are used for own developments as well as for contract research. Occasionally, dedicated units are build and operated for 3rd parties making use of the existing research facilities and the skills and experience of the operators.

Fast pyrolysis

Small-scale pyrolysis unit for the production of a liquid from biomass and residues. Pilot plant (~ 1 MWth) for the production of a pyrolysis liquid from biomass and residues.

Staged gasification

Small-scale multi-step gasification unit for production of a clean fuel gas.

Gasification of liquids

Gasification of liquids to produce clean fuel gas - Syngas.

Supercritical water reforming

Small-scale test installation for the conversion of aqueous, liquid biomass and residues in supercritical water into fuel gas. Pilot-plant installation for the conversion of aqueous liquid biomass and residues in supercritical water to produce syngas.

Pyrolysis oil feeding skid

Support unit to provide continuous and stable feeding of pyrolysis oil to any application.

Torrefaction

Continuous flow, torrefaction/ carbonization unit for the production of bio-coal/bio-char. Small scale screening unit for continuous flow, torrefaction & carbonization.

High pressure

BTG has constructed two types of high pressure boxes to allow for safe testing. Thick-walled, concrete bunkers are used for pilot-plant testing.

Extraction & distillation

Continuous flow, extraction unit for the fractionation of pyrolysis oil. Test unit for the production of phenol-formaldehyde resin.

Hydrotreatment

Small-scale test installation for the (catalytic) treatment of liquids under elevated pressure. Test installation for the (catalytic) treatment of liquids under elevated pressure.

CI Engine

One cylinder, diesel engine for bioliquids fuelling including pyrolysis oil. Diesel engine for fuelling upgraded bioliquids and blends.
