> Services
BTG Biomass Technology Group BV is specialised in the
process of conversion of biomass into useful fuels and
energy. Established in 1979, BTG offers a unique
combination of services covering the entire spectrum of
technical and organisational components of bioenergy
project development. These include feasibility studies,
technology research and development, system engineering
and implementation, technical assistance and consulting,
and business development and financing. BTG works
world-wide and has experience in over 80 countries.
Fields of expertise include:
-
bioenergy conversion processes (biomass combustion, gasification, carbonisation, pyrolysis, liquefaction, and anaerobic digestion).
-
biomass based decentralised rural electrification production of solid and liquid biofuels (pellets, briquettes, charcoal, bio-oil)
-
biomass and biofuels logistics (collecting, handling, storage, transport) and pre-treatment
> Research & Development
R&D work is aimed at developing marketable technologies for the
production of heat, power, transportation fuels and chemicals from
biomass. The current R&D activities include development of
biomass pyrolysis liquids (bio-oil) production technology; application
of bio-oil in boilers, engines and gasifiers for the production of
power, heat, synthetic gas, or hydrogen; development and application
of tar cracking technology for producer gas cleaning, and the
supercritical gasification of wet biomass.
The dedicated R&D laboratory offers a range of experimental equipment
for biomass combustion, gasification, pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion
research, including test rigs, gas cleaning reactors, a flame tunnel,
and test engines.

> Process Engineering & Implementation
The Process Engineering and Implementation (PEI) division has a long track
record of developing biomass conversion concepts for power and heat
production from forestry and agricultural residues for both grid-connected
and stand-alone application. The division specialises on bio-energy system
engineering involving hardware, automation and control system design as
well as process modelling. It carries out general implementation management
including commissioning and performance monitoring. The PEI expertise
furthermore covers non-technical areas such as construction permit application,
environmental legislation, and health & safety issues.

> Technology Assessments and Feasibility Studies
The successful assessment of biomass energy projects requires not only a
thorough understanding of the energy conversion process itself but a good
insight in various related disciplines as well. The studies division has
the expertise to assess the pros and cons of bioenergy technologies as
well as a broad range of related subjects, including biomass production
(energy crops), availability, logistics (collecting, handling, storage,
transport), pre-treatment, financial and economic assessments, renewable
energy support instruments, and regulatory and legal issues. The Studies
division has the skills and expertise required to complete feasibility
studies, technology assessments, resource and energy demand surveys, as
well as socio-economic and environmental evaluations.

> Business Development
The Business Development division works as a broker that brings together technologies,
business parties and funds. BTG identifies suitable commercial partners that are
interested to invest in the generation of heat and power or the production of
biofuels. The Business Development division offers financial engineering for investments required
for technology commercialisation initiatives, develops financing proposals and
prepares detailed business plans.
The Business Development division has been able to unlock Dutch, European and
other international public and private funds for renewable energy projects.
These include the Joint Implementation, Clean Development Mechanism and
Protocol Carbon Fund schemes. Examples of successful financial engineering
include a 10 Million USD solar photovoltaic electrification project in Bolivia
and a 50 Million USD portfolio of 28 bio-energy projects in the Czech Republic.
