The European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) has featured the Horizon Europe project FertiCovery in a new article highlighting the role of nutrient recovery in building a more resilient and circular agricultural system. As project coordinator, BTG Biomass Technology Group shares its vision on how livestock manure and other biowaste streams can become valuable resources for bio-based fertilisers.

The article explores how recovering nutrients from livestock manure, wastewater and other biowaste streams can help reduce Europe's dependence on imported mineral fertilisers while supporting climate action, soil health and a more circular bioeconomy.

Throughout the article, Martijn Vis, FertiCovery coordinator at BTG, explains why nutrient recovery is essential for strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy in nutrients. He also highlights the importance of moving beyond treating manure as a waste stream:

"Livestock manure should no longer be seen as a waste stream, but as a valuable resource that helps close nutrient and carbon cycles in agriculture."

The DG AGRI feature also highlights one of FertiCovery's key achievements to date: the assessment of more than 150 nutrient recovery technologies, resulting in the selection of 25 promising value chains for detailed technical, environmental and market evaluation. These technologies are brought together in the recently launched online catalogue, helping farmers, industry and policymakers identify practical nutrient recovery solutions that are ready for wider deployment.

The recognition by DG AGRI reflects the growing importance of nutrient recovery within European agricultural and bioeconomy policy, and underlines the relevance of FertiCovery's work in accelerating the transition towards circular, resilient and sustainable farming systems.
