Scenario & policy studies

The increasing need to improve the sustainability of our energy supply calls for the development of policy and policy measures for the promotion and support of bioenergy. BTG helps local, national and supra-national governments, but also NGO’s and large companies, with the development of such policies. Examples of services include scenario studies on bioenergy, ex-ante evaluations of specific policy tools, and the development of protocols to safeguard sustainability of projects and project activities.

In the study ‘Sustainability Criteria & Certification Systems for Biomass Production’. the possibilities of obligatory biomass certification on EU level have been explored, based on experiences with existing certification systems like FSC, PEFC, RSPO etc. The main WTO and other barriers toward obligatory certification covering carbon balances, biodiversity, competition with food, indirect land use, social and local environmental effects have been addressed, leading to the formulation of a possible way forward. Commissioned by the European Commission (DG TREN).
