On the 7th of September the first official in-person MUSIC Progress Meeting in two years was held in Umeå, Sweden.

In the MUSIC project, the market uptake of Intermediate Bioenergy Carriers, like torrefied wood, pyrolysis oil and microbial oil is facilitated. Results of the MUSIC Case Studies were shared, which showed good economic prospects for several key market outlets for IBCs, such as the metallurgical industry for torrefied material, and the transport fuel sector for pyrolysis oil. The most recent policy development, such as the upcoming EU REDIII regulations were shared and discussed. The influence of the current energy crisis in Europe, with record-high prices for gas and electricity was noted; effects are higher biomass prices and more interest in biobased energy, coupled with a much higher emphasis on security of supply.

In the local stakeholder workshop that was held later that day, there was more emphasis on the specific circumstances in the north of Sweden, with relative abundance of renewable electricity and therefore lower prices compared to the rest of Europe. Yet, also in the north of Sweden high quality sustainable residues such as sawdust are a scarce resource, and any newcomer on the market – such as a new pyrolysis plant – will need to carefully consider the local feedstock availability.
