Bologna, 5 June 2023

The Advanced Biofuels Coalition gathers leading technology developers and producers committed to making a significant contribution to meeting the EU climate, energy, and clean mobility targets.

Commenting on the new role, Cuaz stressed “I am honoured to take this role at an exciting time for the sector. The adoption of the ‘Fit for 55’ climate and energy package has increased ambition and expanded the contribution expected from advanced biofuels in achieving EU policy goals. These developments send an important signal to investors, yet we must keep advocating for reduced regulatory complexity and for an ambitious transposition of new requirements at Member States level.”

Cuaz, who has a solid experience in navigating complex legislation and decision-making processes at EU level, succeeds Marko Janhunen, UPM, who served as Chair for the last two years and who will remain in the Advanced Biofuels Coalition Executive committee. Dimeta’s Sophia Haywood and Rob Vierhout of Enerkem will complete the association’s renewed Executive Committee.

Advanced Biofuels Coalition

Advanced biofuels – as defined under Annex IX Part A of the EU Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001/EC – are derived from non-food competing agricultural or forestry residues. These innovative technologies bring multiple benefits in terms of CO2 reduction, increased energy security, additional revenues for farmers and forestry, improved waste management practices, and job creation.

Advanced Biofuels represent highly innovative solutions to reduce emissions in industry and transport, including also harder to decarbonize transport modes such as sustainable aviation fuels, maritime transport, and heavy-duty transport, as well as wider applications such as in the off-grid energy sector.

Members of the Advanced Biofuels Coalition are committed to developing and investing in innovative advanced and environmentally sound advanced biofuel industrial systems bringing the technologies into commercial deployment on a global scale.
